A bizarre long-necked Pliosaurid from the Early Jurassic; Hauffiosaurus was a medium-sized plesiosaur growing to around an adult length of around 5 meters (16 feet). The genus was named in 2001, and this species in particular was named in 2011. However, for many years it was considered a specimen of Macroplata, another early pliosaur. Thus, most depictions of Macroplata before 2011 actually depict Hauffiosaurus. Like many other early pliosaurs, Hauffiosaurus had an extended neck that made it more closely resemble the Plesiosauroid plesiosaurs, however it still retained an elongated skull typical of the Pliosauroidea. It likely preyed primarily on smaller prey such as fish, squid and small marine reptiles.
